Immunity may be defined as the ability of a host to withstand harmful effects caused by micro-organisms and their products.
Primary organs and tissues of immune system
Thymus is the primary organ and Bone marrow is the primary tissue of immune system. Producing immunological competence on the lymphocytes is the main work of these organs. T-cells and B-cells are the primary cells of immune system. These cells are responsible for both non-specific and specific immunity of human body. Many mature lymphoid cells are long lived and persist as memory cells for many years.
Major Immunoglobulins
Immune response is produced by four types of immunoglobulins – IgA, IgE, IgG and IgM in human body. IgG is major immunoglobulin in human serum and protects body fluids. IgA is the second major and protects the body surface. IgM is the first antibody synthesized in human body and protects blood stream. IgE mediates type-I hypersensitivity.
Immune response in children
Immune response starts from the foetal stage. IgM is synthesized within 20 weeks of foetal life. It protects the foetus during pregnancy. Natural passive immunity passed to newborn from mother through placenta. After birth, immunoglobulins are passed to the newborn through breast milk. The human colostrums is rich in IgA antibodies which are resistant to intestinal digestion and gives protection to the neonates (New born babies) up to three months of age.
Maturity of Immunity
The infant has to depend on itself for antibody protection from 3-6 months of age. The full competence is acquired only by 5-7 years for IgG and 10-15 years for IgA. The capacity to produce antibodies starts only with the development and differentiation of lymphoid organs.
Importance of enhancing immunity in children
The higher susceptibility of the young to infections can sometimes be associated with the immaturity of immune system. Newborns are more susceptible to infections than adults. Vaccines and nutrition play a major role in boosting immunity in children. It is easy to induce immune tolerance at younger age. So enhancing immunity in children is most important thing which can be achieved through adjuvants. Adjuvant is any substance that enhances the immunogenicity of the antigen.
