Change in seasonal and environmental factors such as temperature, sunlight, rain, wind and humidity have a direct link with catching infectious disease easily.
Cough and cold are one such disease caused by a viral infection. Although you can get cold year-round winter months are considered to be the most common ‘cold and cough season’ when the viruses that cause the disease spread more easily due to colder and dry air.
With the onset of cooler weather, the viral infections are triggered and worsened. Fighting off a viral infection takes its toll on most people, causing them to miss days at work and valuable time with their friends and families.
When it is cold outside, the air is drier both outdoors and inside (due to heating), drying out mucous membranes and making it easier for germs to take hold.
The nose is an ideal host for many viruses due to its cooler temperature. One study suggests colder temperatures on their own do not increase the spread of colds and flu, but temperature and humidity fluctuations do.
Avoid close contact
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
Cover your mouth and nose
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Flu and other serious respiratory illnesses, like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and COVID-19, are spread by cough, sneezing, or unclean hands.
Clean your hands
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
